Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at info@wandernatureschool.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Wander Nature School is an early childhood education program that  emphasizes outdoor, nature-based learning. We integrate environmental education into our curriculum, allowing young children to explore and learn in natural settings.

A typical day starts with free play, followed by outdoor exploration and activities such as a nature walk in the woods, playing at some of our enrichment stations like our mud kitchen, or participating in a guided activity. The day includes a BYO snack/lunch, story time, creative play, and reflection time.

Our program is curated for children ages 2-5. We are in session Monday through Friday, 9 am to 1 pm. We can accomodate younger or older littles depending on need/readiness.

No, we do not allow caregivers to stay with their children during Nature School sessions. We find that children acclimate better to the  environment and activities when they get used to a drop-off routine.  However, we understand the importance of staying connected, so  caregivers are welcome to text or call us to check in on their child  during the day. Our staff is always available to provide updates and  ensure that your child is having a positive experience.

We do not typically close for rain or cold weather. We dress appropriately and adjust activities as needed. If conditions become unsafe, we may shift to a hybrid day using our indoor space or close for safety reasons. Time indoors is still 100% screen free.

No. For children that are potty trained, or are currently training, we have access to a bathroom indoors. For diapered children, we have a designated diaper changing station.

Yes, one-day enrollment is available. However, we recommend at least two days a week to help children adjust more easily. With only one day, there’s a full week between visits, which can make each session feel new all over again—especially for our younger learners.

Wander maintains a 1:5 student-teacher ratio, meaning one staff member for every five children.

This ratio is tighter than typical North Carolina requirements, which allow larger group sizes depending on age. We intentionally keep our groups small so our staff can really get to know each child, build strong relationships, and provide close supervision—especially in a nature-based setting.

Smaller ratios allow us to better support children emotionally, socially, and developmentally while keeping safety at the center of everything we do.

Wander uses a gentle, relationship-based approach. We do not use time-outs or punitive discipline. Instead, we use “time-ins,” emotional coaching, and developmentally appropriate support to help children work through challenges. Safety is always our priority.

All families receive Wander’s full set of policies—including our sick policy, payment policies, drop-off and pick-up procedures, and safety guidelines—at registration in our Parent Handbook.

We ask all families to review the handbook carefully, as it outlines how our program operates and helps ensure clarity and consistency for everyone in our community. Acknowledgment of the Parent Handbook is required as part of enrollment.
